I first saw Doug Johnston's work on a recent trip to Copenhagen in my favorite design store, Stilleben. As soon as I saw his baskets I was hooked. Each piece he creates looks and feels like a labor of love and creativity. Spanning design, architecture, music and a variety of art mediums including installation, sculpture, photography, performance and fiber art, Doug Johnston has mastered all art forms.
Based in his Brooklyn studio, he is most popularly known for his line of coiled and stitched rope pieces ranging from his beautiful baskets to sculptures, stools and light fixtures. With a signature style using cotton rope and a soft, minimal pallet, his work reads unique, whimsicle, simple and functional - something I admire deeply in a designer. To me, each of his pieces adds to the feeling of a thoughtful home.
